Most “K to 3.5mm” adapter cables on the market use a 3-pole TRS plug. That means they can pass audio out, but they leave the microphone/PTT circuit incomplete - so your connected headset can listen, but it cannot transmit through the radio. 
This adapter is built differently: it terminates in a 3.5mm TRRS 4-pole male plug, keeping all four conductors active for stereo audio output and the mic/PTT signal path. The difference matters the moment you press the PTT button and expect your voice to go out.
